Skill Up Kentucky: An Innovative, Contextualized Curriculum for the 21st Century Workplace
This session presents the development and implementation of an innovative adult education program that provides adult learners with new pathways to academic success. This new GED program partners adult education and community college instructors who integrate four content areas during instruction (GED Subjects, Professional Soft Skills, 21st Century Skills, and specialized content knowledge in computers and other professional fields) to provide graduates with the unique skills and strategies relevant in today’s workforce. Come hear the results of the pilot program in which our graduates not only completed their GED but also earned multiple technical certificates and 24 college credits.

Social Justice Allies in Adult Education: Creating a Culture of Respect
In a climate of anti-gay bullying, xenophobic rhetoric, and religious oppression, workers fear for their jobs and students for their safety. How can teachers create classrooms that are safe for all students, regardless of ethnicity, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, immigration status, or employment? We need to become allies for social justice and learn to go beyond mere inclusivity and act on actual power dynamics. In this interactive learning workshop, we will discuss other forms of oppression; learn to create a culture of inclusion and respect; identify the behaviors that make for good social justice allies, discuss implications for professional development, and develop an action plan.

Skill Up Kentucky: An Innovative, Contextualized Curriculum for the 21st Century Workplace
This session presents the development and implementation of an innovative adult education program that provides adult learners with new pathways to academic success. This new GED program partners adult education and community college instructors who integrate four content areas during instruction (GED Subjects, Professional Soft Skills, 21st Century Skills, and specialized content knowledge in computers and other professional fields) to provide graduates with the unique skills and strategies relevant in today’s workforce. Come hear the results of the pilot program in which our graduates not only completed their GED but also earned multiple technical certificates and 24 college credits.

Social Justice Allies in Adult Education: Creating a Culture of Respect
In a climate of anti-gay bullying, xenophobic rhetoric, and religious oppression, workers fear for their jobs and students for their safety. How can teachers create classrooms that are safe for all students, regardless of ethnicity, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, immigration status, or employment? We need to become allies for social justice and learn to go beyond mere inclusivity and act on actual power dynamics. In this interactive learning workshop, we will discuss other forms of oppression; learn to create a culture of inclusion and respect; identify the behaviors that make for good social justice allies, discuss implications for professional development, and develop an action plan.

Omega School for the past thirty seven years has provided one to one GED preparation, using private offices, a quiet environment, paid instructors, on-site babysitting, GED test fee support, free bus tokens and is located in a secured facility by a major transportation hub. These supports and interventions have eliminated the major obstacles identified by GED students as impediments for their success. The presentation will detail how these supports lead to 95% success on the GED exams.
