Does Technology Belong in a 21st Century Immigrant Refugee ESL Classroom?  YES!
Online learning requires a high level of document and computer literacy that many ESL students lack.  Newer web 2.0 tools offer opportunities for creative and collaborative learning.  There is an increasing demand for these skill sets in  21st century life.  Programs that offer technology often assume that the learner brings this kind of literacy or is self directed enough to gain it without assistance.  The result is that many students are not given an opportunity to become successful online learners.  This presentation will explore an orientation framework that scaffolds the learning of communicative, creative and collaborative uses of technology for newcomers.

Effectively using the TABE CLAS‐E System
TABE CLAS-E is an integrated system of assessment, instruction and proposal development for educators working with Adult English Language Learner students.  In this demonstration, participants will understand how this coordinated system can be used for planning and instruction to supports ELL students transition into basic adult education programs.

K-12 ELD Frameworks for Adult Education
Participants will engage in an interactive presentation of an ELD framework for Adult Education ESL or Family Literacy instruction. Participants will practice designing a simple lesson as a way to apply the principles they learned. They will learn about and practice using dynamic tools that teach explicit language learning. Participants will learn from and leave with an example of and EL Civics unit that implements the ELD framework.

A Professional Development Model for Teachers of ESOL and Workforce Development

Using the Language Experience Approach in Adult ESL Classrooms
Current research shows the effectiveness of using authentic materials and activities to teach literacy in adult ESL classrooms. After presenting key findings of research, the presenter will introduce the Language Experience Approach (LEA), highlighting its value for adult ESL learners. LEA strategies will be demonstrated, with a focus on the creation and use of learner-dictated stories to teach reading. These stories are based on learners' own experiences and needs in real life.
