Inquiry Areas
The Commission on Adult Basic Education (COABE) and the California Council for Adult Education (CCAE) are pleased to welcome you to the 2011 national conference titled Literacy to Work: Adult Education for a Global Economy. The field of Adult Education faces many new challenges now and in the coming years. The 2011 conference committee believes that an innovative approach to problem solving and professional development is necessary to meet those challenges. We hope this will be a meaningful, professional learning experience for you and one that offers a wide variety of sessions to meet the training needs of our field.
The conference theme will be addressed through key note presentations, panel presentations, and will be explored through multiple lenses in various workshop presentations. Toward that goal the conference committee has developed four Inquiry Areas and associated featured PD workshops. Inquiry Areas have been organized by partner agencies who have volunteered their time to this effort. We encourage you to attend the sessions in the four inquiry areas as you plan your conference attendance.
The four inquiry areas, the sponsoring agency, and the focus question for each inquiry follow:
21st Century Classroom
· To meet 21st century demands what should take place in the 21st century adult education classroom and why?
· Sponsored by the American Institutes for Research
A Learner-Centered System
· What does an adult education system built for student learning look like and why?
· Sponsored by CCAE and the American Institutes for Research
Social Change
· How do we balance the increasing emphasis on workforce development with the varying educational and social needs and goals of adult students?
· Sponsored by Voices of Adult Literacy United
Workforce Development
· What is the role of the workforce education system in a global economy and what role should adult education play in that system?
· Sponsored by Oakland Unified School District—Oakland Adult and Career Education
Each Inquiry Area will be kicked-off by 1.5 hour a plenary session taking place on Monday, March 18th from 10:45 a.m.–12:15 p.m. Plenary sessions will be led by the sponsoring agency and include presentations by leading practitioners, policy makers, and thought-leaders in the education field. Featured workshop sessions offered by a number presenters in each Inquiry Area will take place throughout the conference schedule. The Inquiry Areas will be concluded at a follow-up and reflection session on Wednesday, March 20th from 3:00–4:30 p.m.
