Hello and Welcome to San Francisco!

We are extremely excited to have you here with us this week.  We have a lot of fascinating programs, keynotes, activities, and special events for your professional development and enjoyment.  We think that you will walk away not only with many new ideas but will also be able to continue learning from these ideas well beyond this conference.

This year’s theme is “Literacy to Work: Adult Education for a Global Economy”.  Our keynote speaker, Dr. Frank Benest will kick off the major part of the conference that will introduce our theme and tie it together with the conference.  On Tuesday, you will hear from Cheryl Keenan, Director of the U.S. Department of Education's Division of Adult Education and Literacy in the Office of Vocational and Adult Education.  Our plenary sessions will embed our theme.  It may be difficult for you to choose which session to attend!  During the plenary sessions you will get a chance to participate in an Inquiry Area and then choose if you like to go to the many sessions related to that particular inquiry area.  There are more details in this program.

In addition to the Inquiry Areas, you still will be able to choose from many useful and enthralling sessions related to Public Policy, Post-Secondary Transitions and Student Re-entry, Distance Education, Workforce Development, Advocacy and Marketing, Program Management and Improvement and many more.

You won’t want to miss the special events we have planned for you.  Sunday evening, after an exciting day of Pre-Conference workshops, we will kick off the main conference with a Martinis and Jazz at Sunset in the fabulous Cityscape room at the top of the SF Hilton.  On Monday evening, please be sure to drop into the Presidents’ Reception from 5-7 p.m. for great entertainment and networking.  This reception will include the 2012 Virginia conference promotional event with some fun prizes.  On Tuesday evening, you will be able to partake in our ultimate special event: the San Francisco Bay Cruise and Dinner Dance on the Hornblower yacht.  Where else will you get to see the City by the Bay as the sun sets!  On Wednesday evening, please join us to wrap up the main conference with California Wine Tasting in Cityscape.  All of the fun things that everyone wants to do in San Francisco are featured for your convenience during this conference.

On Thursday, we also have post conference activities at the hotel and offsite Field Trips to local exemplary programs.

Your Conference Administrative Team (CAT) wishes to send a huge thank you to the entire planning committee, who put in thousands of hours of volunteer time to prepare for this memorable conference.  Also, we offer our deepest gratitude to our partners, COABE, CCAE and MPAEA who have provided tremendous support through this planning process.  Finally, we wish to thank all of our sponsors.  Their generous support of the conference allowed us to offer many events that helped to make it more affordable for all.

As the song says, we have “opened our golden gate” to all of you and wish you the best conference experience ever!
